The Mannion Collection

Welcome!

The information presented in this tool may be of interest to people of Irish ancestry researching their own family history.

It allows for the search of the incredible collection of information collected using a variety of digitally recorded fields, and the retrieval of the digitized images of the cards that make up this phase of the collection. The results include all person and place data, religion, date events, life events, and others. There are also specialized mapping features available from the Search menu item above.

The Mannion Collection is a unique body of research representing Irish migration and settlement on the island of Newfoundland from 1750 to 1850. These records, collected over a lifetime by historical geographer Dr. John Mannion and his wife Maura, have been donated by the Mannion Family to the Town of Torbay. The Town will ensure this research is available both online and at our new genealogy centre located within History House, the Town’s cultural centre.

In assuming responsibility for this collection, the Town would like to acknowledge the work done previously to make this body of research accessible, searchable, and available to all those who have an interest in the migration and settlement of those who made the journey from Ireland and helped shape the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in so many ways. This unique collection would not be accessible online as a searchable database without the support of Memorial University (Dr. Sean Cadigan), the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Government of Ireland.
